I didn’t expect a response, but I got one immediately.

Thank you. You’re one in a million. Sleep well.

I plan to. You do the same.

I’ll try.

Dec 12

I tried texting Ken tonight, but I never got much of a response. Just a “hey” when I said hello. It seems kind of weird, but since it’s the start of finals, I guess it isn’t that weird. When I didn’t hear from him Monday or Tuesday, I knew it had to be because of finals. So I had to wait until our final on Wednesday to tell him about my adventures on Saturday night.

“You would not believe the weekend I had,” I said as soon as I saw him.

“Hm,” was all he said. It wasn’t even a curious ‘hm,’ or a polite ‘go-ahead, I’m listening’ sort of ‘hm.’ It was more a distracted sort of ‘hm.’ So I went with the tell-him-anyway plan, as opposed to the get-upset-because-he’s-not-listening plan.

“That’s nice,” he said when I stopped for air. Wow, talk about really not listening! Okay, time to do the listening, he must have a lot on his mind.

“Are you all right?” I asked.

“Sure, I’m fine,” he answered.

“How was your weekend?”

“Good.”

Wow, he wasn’t giving me much to go on.

“That good, huh?” I prodded him. “No gory details? No tales of bravado and derring-do?”

“No, nothing that exciting. Got all my homework done. That can be a triumph of a sort. I had a big paper I had to turn in this morning. I’m really glad the biology final isn’t until Friday.”

“Well, then, you should look happier.”

“Oh,” he finally sighed and said, “I had a kind of unhappy conversation with my parents over the weekend. I want to be a marine biologist, but my parents don’t think I’d make enough money living at a study facility on a beach in Costa Rica. My mother wants me to go to business school. My father wants me to get an accounting degree to go into banking or finance, and I think my grandmother wants me to be a CEO. I can’t even just be an accountant, that still isn’t good enough for them.”

I was amazed. Did he sound like Edward Farris, or what? Well, I could certainly learn a thing or two from Elinor Dashwood. She was certainly the more admirable sister, if you think about it. Kind and selfless and steady. What would Elinor say?

“What are you going to do?”

“I don’t know. It’s my life, I should be able to do what I want. But they’re the ones paying for my education. So I’m kind of stuck.”

“Can you take out student loans? Or, can you get your MBA, and then use the money from being a CEO to fund your marine biologist degree?” I asked.

Ken smiled a little. “I will admit, that hadn’t occurred to me.”

The teacher started handing out the exam books for the final. I was so glad I was able to get a smile out of him, at least, beforehand. Then the lights went out, and we watched a short movie, after which we had to answer a lot of questions about it.
